Susan Lewis Solomont lives in Weston, Ma and is actively involved in numerous civic activities in the Greater Boston area.
In June 2013 Susan Lewis Solomont moved back to the United States after living in Madrid, Spain with her husband Alan D. Solomont, the United States Ambassador to Spain and Andorra (2009-2013).
While living in Madrid, Ms. Solomont was involved in numerous activities. She chaired the American Chamber of Commerce, Women’s Leadership Committee. Among other activities, the Committee produced a number of reports on the role of women in business in Spain. At US Embassy Madrid, Ms. Solomont created the Women’s Leadership Network, a series of events designed to promote the role of women’s in business and civic life and to help shine a light on the leadership role of women in Spain. Ms. Solomont also chaired the US Embassy’s Volunteers in Action program, which engaged Embassy employees, and family members in volunteer activities throughout Spain.
Ms. Solomont is a member of the Board of Advisors for Spain Investor Start Up Summit. She has been a speaker on a range of topics including women and entrepreneurship, the role of Ambassador’s spouse, philanthropy and corporate social responsibility. She has been featured several times by Spanish media regarding the leading role she played representing the United States in Spain.
Ms. Solomont is a Senior Advisor at The Philanthropic Initiative (TPI) in Boston, Massachusetts. She works with private family foundations, to create entrepreneurial and strategic approaches to private philanthropy
Prior to joining TPI, Susan had an independent consulting company that worked with not-for-profit organizations, helping them with governance, board relations, capacity building and sustainability strategies.
Earlier in her career, Ms. Solomont worked for WGBH, the nation’s premier public broadcasting station. As the Director of Corporate Development, she successfully raised funds for WGBH’s signature TV and Radio programs, raising over $35 million annually from local and national companies.
Ms. Solomont is committed to being an active citizen in the community in which she lives. She is currently on the board of the Berklee College Of Music, The Commonwealth Institute and the Instituto International (Madrid). She has been a board member and lay leader of many leading institutions, including the Anti Defamation League (ADL) New England, Tufts University Friedman School of Nutrition, the New England Aquarium (board chair 1999-2004), the Women’s Health Initiative at Boston Medical Center (Co- chair 2006-2009), Newton Wellesley Hospital, the Citi Center for the Performing Arts (formerly the Wang Center), the WGBH Board of Overseers, Boston Jewish Community Women’s Fund and Temple Beth Elohim (Chair, Building Campaign, 2005- 2009).
She has received several awards recognizing her community leadership, including the FEDEPE International Woman of the Year Award, Madrid, Spain and the YWCA Outstanding Women’s Leadership Award, Boston, Massachusetts.
She is currently working on two books based on her experiences in Spain.
Ms. Solomont earned a Bachelor of Science degree at Cornell University and a Masters of Education degree at Tufts University.
She is married to Alan D. Solomont and they have two wonderful daughters, Becca, 28 and Stephanie, 23.
